Trekking in Nepal is often on a person’s ‘bucket list’. Later this year one could have this opportunity while also helping to build a girl’s dormitory in the village of Salleri located in the Solukhumbu region in eastern Nepal.
Around 15 adventurous volunteers (male or female over 18) are needed for the construction of this project. No previous building experience is necessary. The construction of the dorm is being organized by ‘Edge of Seven’ based in Denver Colorado. Edge of Seven is a non-profit organization that promotes education for Nepali girls living in remote villages. Local teacher Jeanine Gibby heard of the program while volunteering with the Australian Himalayan Foundation’s Teacher Training program in 2011. Having travelled to the Solukhumbu on numerous occasions to work with schools Jeanine sees the need for girls to have their own boarding house.
The dates of the trip are tentatively set for November 30 to December 15, 2014. Sturdy individuals who enjoy immersion in a different culture, enjoy mountain trekking, and enjoy promoting girls ‘education should call or email Jeanine (by March 7) at 6867-1100 or gibbyj@live.com.au for more information on this incredible opportunity.
