When Oscar Townsend was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago the Townsend family were shocked and overwhelmed.
Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any time, and 7 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
Fast forward three years and Type 1 has become part of the Townsend family and Oscar’s everyday lives. Some days are easy and others are just awful for Oscar. Lucky for Oscar, he has an amazing sister Hillary and brother Fergus, great teachers and fantastic friends at St Eddies in Canowindra who look out for him.
This October Oscar’s Mum, Mandy Townsend decided to have a go at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk Step Challenge.
Mandy is going to walk 100kms throughout October, by doing different hikes on the weekends and during the holidays with the three kids. “Hopefully, we can help to raise funds for research to cure, prevent and better treat type 1 diabetes,” said Mandy.
