The Sky Is The Limit: Canowindra’s Nine Days Of Magic Returns

8 April, 2026 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The 2026 Canowindra International Ballooon Challenge will run from 11 to 19 April.

From 11 to 19 April, the Canowindra International Balloon Challenge returns for 2026. For nine days, our historic town transforms into the “Balloon Capital of Australia,” offering a spectacle that draws thousands from across the region. Supported this year by Destination NSW and the NSW Government, whether you’re a lifelong local or visiting for the first time, this year’s program is packed with enough action to fill the school holidays.

The festival kicks off with a bang on Saturday 11 April, with the Street Party on Gaskill Street. Come along and can browse local craft stalls, enjoy live music, and witness the smoke and sizzle of the Canowindra Butchery BBQ Masters Competition.

Throughout the week, the skies remain the main stage with balloons taking flight in the early mornings and afternoons. On the ground, spectators can enjoy a relaxed pace with a range of mid-week events.

For the full program see the back page of the Canowindra Phoenix, download the Canowindra Live App and check out www.canowindrachallenge.org.au.

As the final weekend approaches, the energy shifts to high-voltage. On Friday, 17 April, the Canowindra Sports Complex hosts Home Ground Sounds Friday Night Concert. The headline act, Furnace and the Fundamentals, are a force of nature.

Their “Furnapalooza” show is a non-stop medley of the greatest hits from the last 60 years, featuring choreographed antics and inflatable crowd rides designed to turn the sportsground into the biggest party in the Central West.

The momentum carries into Saturday, 18 April, beginning with the highly anticipated Balloon Key Grab, followed by a vibrant Street Parade. The “must-see” event, however, is the Cabonne Community Glow that evening. As dusk settles, the hot air balloons tether and inflate, glowing in synchronization to a musical soundtrack. Surrounded by a night market with over 100 stalls, and this year free kids activities from Party Planet, it is a sensory experience that defines the festival.

New for 2026 is the Canowindra Live app.

This digital companion provides real-time notifications on launch times and weather updates, ensuring you never miss a mass ascent. It also houses the full program and offers exclusive discounts at local shops when you show the app on your phone.

Download “Canowindra Live” before you leave home to ensure you have the latest schedule at your fingertips, even when offline.

Grab your picnic blanket, charge your phone, and get ready for a week that truly reaches for the stars! Visit www.canowindrachallenge.org.au for tickets, visit Balloon HQ at the Phoenix Office on Gaskill Street and download the Canowindra Live app.
