Dear Editor,
My name is Geoffrey Lynch, a former resident of Canowindra from 1945 – 1961.
I was interested in the latest article on the early pioneers and have attached a record of my late grandfather who was an early resident.
My father was Thomas (Tommy) Lynch and my mother was Nancy (Nance) who ran a stock and station business from the round shaped building down from the original rail crossing off Gaskill Street. I had two older sisters Colleen and Rhonda, both deceased and I now live in Belmont with my wife Lynne.
My sister Rhonda married Robert Brown who was the son of the prominent Brown family who had a lot to do with the establishment of Moyne. Robert’s brother Ian still lives in Canowindra.
I went to school at the original Canowindra Central School K-6 and then off to Cowra High for high school, where I was Vice Captain of the school in 1961. On leaving school I trained at Bathurst Teachers College where I met my wife Lynne, and taught at Spring Hill then Bribbaree, before being called up for two year National Service in 1966. I continued teaching for 42 years.
I was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2006 for contribution to music as I was heavily involved in a High School marching band “The Marching Koalas”.
I retired from teaching in 2008 and now live happily in retirement.
I have wonderful memories of Canowindra – swimming in the Belubula, swinging on the Swinging Bridge, the 1954 flood, the opening of the swimming pool, sheaf tossing at the Canowindra Show, putting pennies on the rail line and waiting for the train to come along and flattening it, the emus, peacocks and kangaroos at the Canowindra football ground and so much more.
Cheers,
Geoff Lynch
