Talented Authors Visit Community Reading Day

29 August, 2018 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Canowindra held another successful Community Reading Day last Thursday at Canowindra Public School with over 140 students from Cabonne Blayney Family Day Care, Canowindra Pre-School, St Edward’s Primary School, Canowindra High School and Canowindra Public School attending.

There were many activities on offer for the students throughout the day from a number of the community groups including the Canowindra Community Health Centre and the Central West Library. The children had their faces painted by the High School Students and learnt about healthy eating choices with the Community Health Centre staff.

This year Canowindra was lucky enough to have two authors participate in the day. Freya Blackwood (the 2018 CBCA shortlist author/illustrator for picture book of the year – The Great Rabbit Chase) from Orange, delighted the children with a story and then went on to sketch and illustrate an image. “You are very good,” said Florence McDonald from St Edward’s Primary School to Freya when she started sketching. Some of the students were lucky enough to take home their very own sketch from Freya.

Katrina Roe was the other visiting author Katrina’s new book, Lily’s Balloon, has just been released by Wombat Books. Canowindra Public School would like to thank all the groups who helped out with the reading day activities and to the wonderful volunteers, the CWA ladies who cut up all the donated fruit, IGA for donating the bread and to the P&C helpers who cooked the BBQ.
