War Stories: 19th July 2016 is the centenary of the battle of Fromelles, the first action of Australian troops on the Western Front in WWI. It is the biggest loss of life of Australians in any one day, in our history. How did this happen? What went wrong? Who were the local men involved? In recent years, a mass grave of many of these Australians has been discovered, DNA testing carried out, and re-burial, including a local man. Canowindra Historical Society is commemorating this anniversary with a presentation by local historians, discussing both the ‘big picture’ of the Western Front, and the ‘local stories’, and invite all members of the community to attend their ‘History in the Club; Telling our War Stories’ event on Friday 22nd July from 2pm at the RSL Hall. $5 donation is appreciated.

Creative Canowindra: The Canowindra Creative Centre recently held an Acrylic Painting Workshop led by Sue Hodge. The day was attended by 5 budding landscape artists. Plans of future art classes and workshops are already underway, so watch this space. If you’d like more information please contact Deb on 6344 2490 or debrutter@bigpond.com

Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW: From July 2017 greyhound racing will be banned in our state, following Premier Mike Baird’s announcement, saying the “widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals” cannot be tolerated. NSW is the first state in Australia to ban the sport
following reports that between 48,000 to 68,000 dogs were killed in the past 12 years for being too slow or otherwise unsuitable for racing. Are you a greyhound owner or trainer? How do you feel about the ban? Send your thoughts to editor@canowindraphoenix.com.au

Happy Birthday! Lee Webb celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday at Montrose House. She enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked by Tommy Jeffs surrounded with friends and family. Lee celebrated her actual birthday on 12th July, we wish you all the best Lee!
