Rural Round-Up…Local Livestock Selling This Spring

27 August, 2014 By editor

Located up the Young road as you travel through Cowra is the Cowra Regional Livestock Selling Centre. The Cowra Saleyards were relocated to their current site in 1964, and offer a high quality facility which allows for the efficient movement of livestock through the centre. The yards also offers holding paddocks to stock which are in the yards for any length of time, this results in less stressed animals leaving the site. The Cowra, yards offer an integrated approach bringing together producers, selling agents, and buyers, and is a hub of activity every Friday when some of the best bred lambs in the country are offered for sale. Standing in the sunshine, the yards are transformed from a peaceful setting into a hive of activity as the seller begins, speaking and moving with a pace which would leave urban people dumbstruck. The buyers shift quickly from pen to pen and sales are completed within seconds, showing the efficiency of the Centre. The MSA accredited yards can hold numerous types of livestock including cattle, lambs and sheep. There are 6 livestock selling agent companies that feature at this centre, three of which are JJ Dresser & Co, Allan Gray & Co and Landmark.
JJ Dresser & Co was founded by Joseph Dresser in 1945 at Mandurama, moving to Woodstock two years later in 1947 where it remains to this day. Since those early years, the company has traded and continued to expand. Staff members bring individual attributes and skills to the company, developing the strong and trusted agency you do business with today business with today.
Allan Gray & Co, located on Kendal Street in Cowra, is a Livestock and Property Agents supplier. They provide the full range of services including sheep and livestock agents over an extended service area and have been supporting the local community for over 89 years.
Landmark is located close to the Livestock Selling Centre on the Young Road. Though the company has extended to branches all over Australia, those branches still like to support local events, such as the 2014 Landmark Beef Championships which is on this weekend in Tamworth. Providing a range of services including insurance and merchandise, their slogan is “we do more, so you can do more” a motto they abide by to the letter.
Last Friday Dorset cross Merino/ Border Leicester suckers made up to $140.50, with older lambs to $150. Buyers travel from interstate to participate in Cowra, which speaks volumes of the quality of the stock on offer. The Centre also has a 2 bay “B” double Avdata truck wash for patrons convenience, so if you’re looking for a professional, quick and easy way to buy or sell your livestock, this is the place for you.
