This year’s Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on Monday 11th November in Memorial Park starting at 10:30am. It will mark 63 years since the unveiling of the Cenotaph on the 11th November 1956 in Memorial Park.
In June 1952 RSSAILA requested consideration by the shire of construction of a permanent Cenotaph in Memorial Park. By December 1955 the Sub-Branch had selected a suitable Cenotaph design with a construction cost of approximately £570.
The Canowindra Chamber of Commerce sponsored an appeal to raise funds for the construction of the Cenotaph. The Boree Shire Council agreed to donate £150 to- wards the project, while a similar amount was contributed by the RSL Sub-Branch.
The Cenotaph was completed by October 1956 and unveiled by Canowindra RSL patron Mr Stan Kinnimont, during a ceremony held on 11 November 1956. (RSSAILA having been renamed as the RSL).
This joint venture between the Canowindra Chamber of Commerce, Boree Shire Council and the Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch has served the town very well. Any queries about this year’s Remembrance Day service please contact Mike Harrison, President Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch on 0427 640 293.
