NSW Biosecurity are calling on residents to help protect NSW communities and landscapes by reporting feral deer sightings.
Feral deer cause serious harm; from damaging farmland and native environments to increasing the risk of vehicle collisions and destroying residential gardens.
Many deer populations are expanding or appearing in new areas, and early or unexpected sightings are especially important.
Accurate identification helps NSW Biosecurity tailor the right management approach, which is why reporting sightings with DeerScan is so important.
Even if you’re unsure of the species, submit a report – especially if you’ve never seen deer there before.
Several species of feral deer are present or emerging in NSW, and reports of any sighting are valuable, including:
• Fallow deer: widespread across NSW
• Red deer: found in several eastern regions of NSW
• Chital deer: limited but expanding populations, mainly in eastern NSW
The NSW Government is working with land managers across NSW to control feral deer populations. But effective management relies on accurate, up-to-date community reporting, as control options vary depending on species, location and population size.
Your report plays a direct role in shaping targeted, effective action.
