The stormy season is fast approaching and NSW SES with NRMA Insurance are encouraging some pre-storm season training to get ready. During the past twelve months, volunteers in the Central West Region have responded to over 696 storm callouts.
“Getting ready now will give you peace of mind later when the storms hit,” said NSW SES Central West Region Controller Craig Ronan. “It’s that simple.” “Every year we see the effects that storms have on our community,” said Jennifer Cobley, Manager of Partnerships and Programs at NRMA Insurance.
“In a typical year almost half of all home claims in NSW result from storms. The storm events in April this year saw this increase to over 75% of all home claims.” “We encourage communities to get ready for storm season by taking simple steps to prepare their homes. A little work now can protect lives and help prevent damage to properties.”
The storm season officially began on 1 October and winds up at the end of April next year. While severe storms can occur at any time during the year, they are more prevalent during this period. Here are the SES tips for pre-storm season training:
Know your risk and think about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you.
Make a plan for what you will do if a storm affects your area. Visit www.seshomeemergencyplan. com.au to make a plan.
Get your home ready by cleaning your gutters, trimming your branches and securing any items in your backyard.
Be aware and stay tuned for updates by listening to your local radio station, checking the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website or visiting the NSW SES Facebook page.
Look out for each other and share information with your family, friends, neighbours and other people you know may need assistance.
