Emily Thomas on the gold podium.
Local Hammer Throw athlete Emily Thomas has had a busy time of late, competing in the NSW Junior State Championships on 13 March, throwing an impressive 51.36m, a new personal best and winning the Gold Medal. Then on Friday night, Emily competed in the summer series in Canberra, once again hitting the 50m mark.
It was then back to Sydney on Friday 21 March to compete in the NSW Open State Championships. It was a great competition with one of the girls throwing an impressive 52.35 on her first throw, setting the standard, with all the girls knowing that was the mark they had to beat.
Emily’s first throw was a 51.51m personal best, 2nd she threw another 50.43m, 3rd throw 51.36m, 4th she gave it her all but it was a foul, then on her 5th throw, another personal best and taking the lead with a 52.68m. It came down the Emily’s last throw, still holding the lead as she went through her routine and put the hammer out there for another personal best with an amazing 53.67m. An anxious wait followed as the final competitor completed her throw, but it was a foul, and Emily took home the Gold Medal.
So what’s next for Emily? She now maintains her gruelling training schedule, setting her sights on the Australian National Championships in Perth next month, where she will be competing for NSW in the U20’s and the Open Hammer Throw.
In order to help Emily achieve her dreams, a fundraising raffle is being held to help her get to Perth. You can purchase tickets at the Canowindra Services Club and the Canowindra Golf Club, and a table will be set up outside IGA on 5 April.
Thank you to Lawrence’s IGA, Canowindra Services Club, Canowindra Pharmacy and RoundBox for their continued support.
