National Asbestos Awareness Month (130 November) is Australia’s leading multi award-winning asbestos awareness and community education campaign in the pre­vention of asbestos-related diseases.

Experts warn of a continued rise in the third wave of asbestos-related diseases — which already claim three times more Aus­tralian lives than the national road toll each year.

The statistics are alarming:

• 1 in 3 Australian homes contain asbes­tos

• Any home built or renovated before 1990, or commercial property built be­fore 2004, may be at risk

• When disturbed, asbestos can release invisible fibres that cause deadly dis­eases.

With asbestos-related diseases continu­ing to increase among Australians as a di­rect result of exposure to asbestos fibres during home renovations or in the work­place; the importance of increasing aware­ness and educating Australians on how to manage asbestos safely in accordance with regulations cannot be overstated.

Whether you’re a DIYer, tradie or appren­tice, asbestos could be hidden in walls, floors, eaves, fences or bathrooms. Don’t play renovation roulette — always use li­censed professionals for inspections and removal.
