New Defence Leadership Signals Experience And Strength

22 April, 2026 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Michael McCormack has welcomed the appointment of new senior leaders within the Australian Defence Force, recognising their deep experience and the strong message their careers send to current and future service personnel.

Mr McCormack noted the historic appointment of Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO as Chief of the Australian Defence Force, the first individual to rise from a career beginning as a sailor to the nation’s top military position.

“Vice Admiral Mark Hammond’s journey through the ranks reflects the very best of the Australian Defence Force. Dedication, professionalism and a deep understanding of service life at every level,” Mr McCormack said.

Mr McCormack also congratulated Lieutenant General Susan Coyle AM CSC DSM on her appointment as Chief of Army, highlighting her trailblazing career. Beginning her service as a soldier in 1987 and graduating from The Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 1992, Lieutenant General Susan Coyle has demonstrated exceptional leadership across decades of service, including as Chief of Joint Capabilities.

“As the first woman to command a service in Australia’s history, Lieutenant General Coyle’s appointment is both significant and inspiring. As she has said, ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’ and her leadership will no doubt encourage more Australians to consider a career in uniform,” Mr McCormack said.

The appointment of Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley AM C SC RAN as Chief of Navy was also welcomed, with Mr McCormack noting his extensive experience as a submariner.

“Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley brings a wealth of operational knowledge and strategic insight to the role, particularly from his distinguished service,” Mr McCormack said.

Mr McCormack said the appointments reflect a Defence Force that was evolving whilst maintained its core values.

“These leaders represent the strength, diversity and capability of Australia’s military,” he said.

“I look forward to working constructively with Defence leadership to ensure our veterans and serving personnel receive the recognition, support and respect they deserve.”

“Our veterans always deserve the best ADF leaders and no doubt these new appointments will not only have current serving personnel but also veterans right across the nation front of mind.”
