This month is Movember, so that means the moustaches are coming out! For centuries facial hair and manliness have gone hand in hand. Moustaches signify male dominance and power communicating. However, Movember is redefining this by taking a century old symbol of male power and asking us to approach it in a different way and the way men see themselves. Movember is changing men’s health worldwide as it encourages men to talk about their health and that’s exactly what local business Hassad Australia are doing.
The team of six blokes are speaking up for men’s health by all growing, or attempting to grow a moustache. After losing a workmate to mental health last year Manager Rob Atkinson says, “It’s all about bringing men’s health to the floor and creating a culture where you can talk about it.” Hassad Australia are participating in the event for their second year now with this years focus all about raising awareness.
“If someone can get a great laugh out of my mo and that raises awareness for Men’s mental health, then that’s great!” said Rob. The blokes all had to have a clean-shaven face at the start of November to ensure nobody got a head start. “There is definitely a rivalry amongst us but more for who can even grow one,” Rob laughed.
As with any strong rivalry between mates there are some strict rules with shaping up the mo early and then shaving it off at the end of the month. It is great to see Hassad Australia participating in a global initiative to take a stand for men’s health and creating a culture in the community and workplace where you can more openly talk about men’s health. The Movember foundation is helping men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.
