With nominations closing on Wednesday of last week for the upcoming Local Government elections, Canowindra is very well represented with four local candidates seeking election. The Cabonne Shire will go to the polls on September 9 after 14 nominations were made for the 12 councillor positions.
The local candidates are Anthony Durkin, Cheryl Newsom, Kevin Walker and Jenny Weaver. Cr Anthony Durkin and Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Walker are seeking reelection to Cabonne Council and Cheryl Newsom and Jenny Weaver are new candidates for 2017. With a diverse range of skills and qualities between them these four candidates from Canowindra will be a great asset to the Council and the town of Canowindra if elected.
Cabonne residents and ratepayers will also vote on a referendum question when they go to the polls for the council election on September 9. Electors will be asked to decide whether the council reduces its councillor numbers from twelve to nine for the council’s next term in three years’ time.
Eligible voters must vote YES if they support or NO if they oppose the question. If the referendum question is passed, the reduction in councillor numbers will take effect from the Local Government elections in 2020.
Voters will receive the referendum question along with their ballot papers for next month’s Cabonne Council ballot where they will be asked to select the new 12-person council, which will serve from 2017 to 2020.
