Independent Member for Calare Andrew Gee MP, learning about the important role of Food Basket in our community.
It was busier than usual at Canowindra Connections Centre for their Fill-a-Bag morning on Friday 2nd August, with visits from several high-profile guests including Reverend Lorelle Chapman from Uniting Church NSW Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network, Independent Member for Calare Andrew Gee MP and Member for Orange Phil Donato MP.
The Canowindra Connections Centre welcomed the visit by Reverend Lorelle Chapman, who immediately got to work greeting Canowindra locals with a sausage sizzle, cooked by ‘Dingo’, one of Food Basket’s bright and happy volunteers. Lorelle thoroughly enjoyed her morning and will be in attendance at the next Fill-a-Bag morning on Friday 4th October.
Next up was Andrew Gee MP, who came along to see Food Basket in action. Andrew spent time talking with locals and volunteers and learning how Food Basket runs.
He was impressed with the service and how busy things were, and acknowledged that services like Food Basket are important to support communities and families, particularly in the current tough economic times.
Phil Donato MP also attended later in the morning, surprising the Food Basket staff and volunteers with a number of bags of fresh fruit and vegetables. Phil’s donation went out to a local Canowindra lady that was nominated for an anonymous Kindness Box, and it was received with surprise and gratitude. Phil is passionate in his support and encouragement for the Connections Centre to continue their great work with Food Basket and other programs.
For Food Basket social shoppers, the morning was spent stocking up on the usual products as well as books and games.
Fill-a-Bag morning is one of the many initiatives of Connections Centre that gives directly back to the community by providing $10 and $20 bags for the community to fill as high as they can.
It was a wonderful, jam-packed morning and the Connections Centre is grateful for the ongoing support from the Canowindra Community.
