Joanna Balcombe, a year 12 student at Canowindra High School, is off to the Sydney Royal Easter Show to compete in the Junior Judging Competition.
Joanna Balcombe won the Group 10 Zone Final for Junior Judging at the Eugowra Show recently in the Sheep (meat) category, to allow her to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Joanna said, “I feel good about winning at regionals because I have competed in a number of shows last year and kind of had expectations for myself.”
To receive the Junior Judging title Joanna had to examine and then place the four animals in the Sheep (meat) section in the correct order from most to least desirable based on their overall characteristics.
Joanna then had to explain her placings and the reasons behind each to an overjudge and the surrounding spectators in an oral presentation.
Joanna is excited about competing at the Royal Easter Show and says,“At Sydney the atmosphere makes you feel like an actual judge. I’m looking forward to it as every show you learn something new, you can never know everything.”
Joanna has been competing for a number of years now with her father Phil Balcombe so she knows what to expect.
“I have been doing Junior Judging since about year 8, and since then have competed at Sydney previously as well as other shows like Dubbo and Bathurst.
Good luck at the Royal Easter Show Jo!
