Letter to the Editor
Hello. Meet Dave from Canowindra. He’s in his eighties and he is a volunteer driver for Cabonne Community transport. He has been doing it for more than 20 years. His typical day is to pick up a passenger before 7:30 am, drive to Cowra Hospital with a Renal Dialysis patient, drive to Eugowra and pick up a passenger for a medical appointment in Orange. Then do the reverse in the afternoon. This is a usual sort of day- and he does it on multiple days a weekMeet Eddy, Dave’s mate. He too is in his eighties. He also is a volunteer driver. He also has been doing this for over twenty years. He also does multiple trips a day.
From my perspective, these blokes are the real Citizens of the Year – every year!
There are also some other drivers – younger people with daily lives and families to foster and care for. They do what they can, when they can. The community transport badly needs new volunteers.
Dave and his mate must be just about done.
Thankfully a new volunteer driver began.
His available time is limited because he also volunteers for Meals on Wheels – another hero!
Maybe you can put your shoulder to the community wheel once a month or more?
