Dear Editor,
Quoting a section of your article (Issue 441) Water Update – INQUIRY INTO RURAL WATER SUPPLIES, claiming “inundate the precious Cliefden Caves, but also be at risk of leaking and causing earthquakes.” would seem to be a long bow, as the only event that could cause earthquakes would be where water flooded lower galleries of the caves, and it is yet to be seen what the depth of the cave system is because most of the structures underground seem to be above the anticipated dam water line. That is, until a comprehensive geo-tech study is done and the caves depth mapped so far as possible, which survey would also report on the likely penetration of fissures that might exist in the river bed or surrounds that could be penetrated by static dam water pressure.
It is a fact that any initiative in Australia is curtailed by the ‘we can’t do that’ mob who wail and gnash their teeth, as against progressive and desirable improvements for our future security. Stop prevaricating and build the dam.
Regards
Bob Sherwood
