In response to Paul Newell’s letter of last week I would like to say how clearly he explained the reasons for not having dammed water supplies. Out here the evaporation rate is up to 1.8m a year which is a huge amount. We are now slowly converting to subsurface irrigation in our vineyard to further reduce moisture loss through evaporation. We thoroughly concur with him and hope the authorities will see the reasoning.
