Lachy Rice Secures Second Place For NSW At All State Championships

6 August, 2025 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Lachy and Alex Rice compete together in the double-danded saw under the guidance of dad, Matt.

On the last weekend of the school holidays, Lachy and Alex Rice travelled to Gatton iT QLD to chop in the under 21s All-State relay championships held at the Gatton Show. For Lachy, it was his second year on the NSW team but his year, younger brother Alex received a late call-up to join the team as first reserve.

Lachy started the team off in the underhand, performing well to take the team into second place. At the conclusion of the competition, NSW took second place in the overall standings, beating QLD who came third, with the Victorian team securing first place.

The timber used in the competition was Hoop Pine, which is a lot different to the Australian Hardwood used in our local NSW competitions, and it took the boys a while to work out how to cut it.

“You had to cut the pine on a wide angle, and you don’t take it to a V like like you do with our hardwood’,” said Lachy.

Lachy made the u/21 championship final against the best 21 year-olds in Australia and came 7th, a fabulous achievement, considering he is onlty17.

The boys will now hit the gym and Alex will turn his focus to Hammer throwing in athletics until our local show scene begins with the Woodstock Show on the first weekend in September.
