Bingo at the Canowindra Bowling Club is on today from 11:30am, thanks to volunteers June and Ron Brooks.
They took over the running of the competition after Colleen Traves and Gail Davis were looking to stop the bingo after four or five years.
They have been organising it since September 2019, after June heard from a friend how important it is as a social outing.
June, says she’s a “blow in” given she’s lived here for 30 years.
Her background in nursing then retraining as a welfare officer, working at Lyndon for 12 years, has seen her contribute a lot to society.
She said her life experience inspired her not only to help run bingo, but to be on the boards of the Age of Fishes Museum, Canowindra Depression Anxiety Awareness Support Group and Health Council.
“It blows me away how community-minded everyone is in Canowindra,” she said.
“I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve done a lot of things for the community, but I enjoy it. Helping people is what gets me up in the morning.”
“Canowindra is an extraordinary town. I’ve never known a town like it. I’m very proud of our town and that’s why I do bingo.”
Bingo numbers have dropped off, she believes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and because people don’t want to be in enclosed spaces at this current time.
Ron and June ensured the organisation of Bingo was set up as a not-for-profit organisation, so it could be funded by any donations.
She thanks the Club, Lawrence’s IGA as well as bingo players who are happy to sell raffle tickets for their support, as well as the public who buy tickets in order for the games to continue to be played.
