It’s Time For Polo!

4 March, 2015 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The horses are ready, the boots are laced…the polo is almost upon us! The Millamolong Polo Club are celebrating their 25th year next weekend. The Club has always received strong support from the surrounding communities and this year’s events were made possible by the clubs partners, some of which are featured here…
14331107893_88f93c2a8f The dream of making great wine began long before 1988 when Philip Shaw acquired the vineyard site of Koomooloo. Philip discovered the roll of the Orange countryside when flying over the region and after some research he discovered the area had a near-perfect balance of elevation and sunshine. Koomooloo is close to the highest peak of Mount Canobolas, where the vineyard rises to an altitude of 900M with red loam soils over limestone.
“I think great wines shuld have silk, a softness, a texture – in chardonnay and pinot particularly but to some degree it should be in all wines. The tannins should be elegant and soft. It’s about finishing a wine off, not refining it, but getting it right. It’s in the making – a marriage between the vineyard and the winemaking, it’s not only the vineyard, it’s the making, the union” says Philip. Mr. Shaw has now been making wine in Australia for more than four decades and he approaches each aspect of wine making with a healthy mix of innovation and unrelenting quality standards.
Australian Native Landscapes have had a long standing presence in our region. At the moment the Blayney branch are producing black lime compost, perfect for acidic soils, which is a clever blend of high quality lime and nutrient rich compost and ensures your lime stays in your paddock. The combination of the organic matter in mature compost and lime improves product coverage and importantly increases the limes’ efficiency and retention in your soil profile. By using Black Lime you are also providing essential plant nutrients and trace elements to maximise your plants growth and production. ANL’s high quality composts can condition your soil and provide nutrients for your plants in a single application. Importantly, ANL can also offer a cost competitive compost spreading service. For more information on the benefits of ANLs Black Lime compost, or to learn how cost effective it is to use any of ANL’s broad acre agriculture composts on your farm call Roger Crisp on 6366 5205 or 0438 269 027. See you at the Polo!

Angullong is a family owned wine company based in Orange and Millthorpe. The vineyards are located in the foothills of Mount Canobolas (which is an ancient volcano!) and the property has been run by the Crossing family since the 50’s when they acquired it as a sheep and cattle station. The Angullong wine label was created in 2003 and since then the label has flourished. The active family members in the business are Bill and Hatty Crossing and their two sons, James and Ben.
The new year saw new owners take over the Royal Hotel, Madurama. Michelle Marin and Michael Betts took the reins in January. The couple, originally from Griffith, spent 20 years in Queensland working in the construction business. The pair decided it was time for a change and picked the Royal after looking at other pubs in the Central West. ‘We’re really enjoying it’ says Michelle, ‘we are still finding our feet at the moment but some changes we’re introducing is Foxtel Sports is now available for footy season, we want to put some kenos in the bar and we’re looking at counter lunches further down the track.” The couple are about to start meat raffles and are looking into live entertainment in the near future. Though the Royal is not a partner of the Polo event, they are housing many of the players and visitors over the weekend. “We have a large beer garden and can accommodate for parties, we had an 18th this weekend which went down well. We are fully booked out for the Polo weekend which is fantastic and we enjoy supporting the community in activities” Michelle said.
Dudley Private Hospital, another partner of the Polo, is owned & operated by Ramsay Health Care, Australia’s largest & most respected operator of private hospitals. The hospital is a 57 bed facility that provides a range of medical, surgical, rehabilitation and psychiatric services. It also has 3 operating theatres ad 1 procedure room. Dudley Private Hospital has established an excellent reputation in the community for its high commitment to customer service, staff satisfaction & quality improvement. They have been serving the community since 1915 and have been located on the current site, March Street Orange, since 1979. We look forward to seeing you all on the 15th March!
