Harvest for 2016, if the weather holds will hopefully be completed by Christmas. The rest of this week, weather wise looks fine, so many of our local farmers will be finished just on Christmas. Local farmer, Charlie Balcomb, said “We have had a slow start to the wheat with some green wheat, however now we are in full swing, with the yield being some of the best that we have ever harvested.
The wheat has been going 4-6 tonmes to the hectare, and we will be storing most of the wheat for the moment. Barley has also been excellent, going 5 tonnes to the hectare and faba beans, which are exported to Egypt also went well at 4 tonnes to the hectare. Faba beans are a major legume consumed worldwide”
Other local farmers still have lupins and barley to harvest, although should also be finished by Christmas.
