Demolition of the existing Swinging Bridge is set to commence on Monday, 26 August 2024. Due to safety concerns, there will be no access to the site during this time.
The bridge, which was damaged in the November 2022 floods, no longer meets current safety standards despite temporary repairs. The upcoming works will ensure that the new bridge not only complies with these standards but also offers enhanced durability and improved accessibility for all.
Project Timeline:
• Demolition starts: Monday, 26th August
• Estimated completion: Mid/Late December
• Note: The bridge and surrounding area will remain closed for the duration of the works.
The new bridge will retain its iconic suspension design, meaning it will still swing.
It will be constructed from steel and will include heritage-inspired elements, ensuring it respects the legacy of the original 1925 bridge. New ramps will lead to the bridge deck, improving accessibility for all.
Additional site works will include rehabilitation of the riverbanks, which were heavily eroded during the floods, including rock armouring, landscaping, and the replacement of existing trees. New lighting will be installed and there will be additional landscaping works to enhance the area.
This project is fully grant funded through the NSW and Federal Government, as part of the Canowindra CBD Activation Project.
