Collits’ Inn: Uncovering the Past – A Dip Into Canowindra’s Early His

20 October, 2022 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Christine Stewart, Author of Collits’ Inn: Uncovering the Past and the cover of her book.

Canowindra Historical Society and Museum invites historical enthusiasts to attend a presentation by Christine Stewart on the journey she undertook while restoring Collits’ Inn, Hartley Vale.

During the process some of Canowindra’s early history was uncovered by Christine and her husband Russell when they took on the restoration of the almost derelict 1823 Collits’ Inn and its buildings at Hartley Vale in 1998. Christine became intrigued by its fascinating history and wrote a Conservation Management Plan and worked with the architect and builders to restore it as sympathetically as possible.

When it was reopened in 2002, they were delighted to receive an award for the best Heritage Restoration in NSW. In 2020, thirteen years after they sold it in 2007, Christine felt there were so many unusual and exciting discoveries made during the restoration that she needed to write a book about the findings and the history of the vast Collits’ Family. The book, Collits’ Inn: Uncovering the Past, was published in August 2021.

Christine will be giving a talk and a PowerPoint Presentation about the history, restoration, and the many unusual discoveries at 6.30 pm at Canowindra CWA Hall on Thursday 10th November.

Christine will have paperbacks for sale at $35 and hardbacks at $50 and available to sign copies on the night. The book is also available as an e-book.

Presented by Canowindra Historical Society and Museum, History in the CWA Hall, this is a free event to attend but bookings are required. Secure your free seat(s) at www.ticketebo.com.au/collits
