Canowindra’s Swimming Stars

13 April, 2023 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Canowindra Public School Relay Team Haylee, Ava, Lucy and Marley.

For the third consecutive year Ava Thornberry, Lucy Neville and Haylee Stanbury along with newbie Marley Ryan became the fastest senior girls swim relay team west of the Blue Mountains.

The girls headed to Sydney’s Olympic Aquatic Centre on Thursday, 6th March to represent Canowindra Public School and compete against the rest of the state.

The girls had a fantastic swim, taking a massive three seconds off their best time which they swam at the Western Regional Carnival in March.

Unfortunately, this time wasn’t enough to make the finals however they came 19th overall which is an amazing achievement for the Canowindra Public School students, competing against all of the other schools who are able to swim all year round. The girls didn’t even get to train the two weeks prior to competition due to our season ending and the pool closing.

In addition to being a member of the relay team, Ava Thornberry also competed in individual races over the two days. She swam in 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. She finished in or close to the top 20 in these events and achieved some personal bests as well.

A massive congratulations to all four girls on a mighty effort.

We look forward to watching the Canowindra High School students who head down after the school holidays to compete in the State Championship. Good luck to them also.
