The first of July marked the beginning of a new financial year, it was the halfway mark of 2026, it was also Tommy Jeff’s reminder to expedite his Christmas in July preparations.
However, for Canowindra’s Playground Superheros, it marked the day that they would be tested on their self-defence and anti-bullying skills. The nerves were high.
Their instructors watched with eagle eyes.
Once the superheros-in-training were lined up, the test began.
Each child underwent tasks that were both physically and mentally challenging.
Walking up to an instructor, they were tested on their ability to block and suppress apotential bully, if they were attacked. And this was only one aspect to their training.
Throughout the term, these trainees were tasked in taking deliberate weekly actions that would help them grow in their Superhero character traits. Their goal was to achieve badges in: Courage, Manners and Respect. From completing household chores, to trying something new, parents reported on their dedicated efforts.
With all this determination, the instructors had seen the growth in confidence andmaturity of each child and were proud to award them stripes for their belts, a certificate and relevant badges.
Posing for the parent paparazzi, the group of Superheros who had been trained and tested together stood shoulder to shoulder. Ready to take on the holidays and what they would hold.
They will all return in Term 3, at the All Saints Anglican Hall on Monday or Wednesday, 4:30-5:15pm, to continue to hone and upgrade their skills and attempt to win another Superhero badge.
As the anti-bulliers walked away that night, it was the adults turn to attempt to live up to the standard the kids had set for them.
