The Junior Canowindra Tigers played their first game at Wellington last Sunday. This was the start of a new modified competition with teams from Group 11 and Group 10 and Canowindra as part of Woodbridge Cup to give the under 18’s some football this season.
With a mix of local players, some from Molong and Grenfell, the boys have been training on Friday nights.
Local boy Callum Clyburn is the coach and is assisted by Sam O’Malveney. These two boys have a wealth of knowledge of the game and experience and these juniors can gain wealth and knowledge about the game of rugby league.
Their first hit out against Mudgee, played at Wellington, was a very impressive performance which showed plenty of grit and determination from the young Tigers.
Although going down 18-4 it was a tremendous effort as they only had around 45% of the ball. Halftime score was 4-0 to Mudgee and it was only later in the game that Mudgee gained control due to tiredness from the young Tigers.
The more the boys play together and gain more combination they can definitely push the more fancy Group 11 and Group 10 sides.
The Tigers play Wellington at Cowra this Sunday at 12 midday. Look on the Tigers Facebook page for any changes to these times.
The organisers of this competition must be congratulated and also the local club to get this competition off the ground as well as implementing the strict Covid-19 regulations and NSW Rugby League guidelines.
It was great to see so many supporters turn up at Wellington and also to watch some local football.
