Canowindra Tigers

2 June, 2022 By Barry Traves

This week it was tiger versus tiger as Canowindra played the new inclusion to Woodbridge Cup, Oberon. The Canowindra Tigers had a very hard-fought win against a tough opposition to the tune of 28 points to 16. Oberon opened the scoring with a good try from their winger to give Oberon an early lead 0-4.

Nathan Whatman scored the first two tries for Canowindra which were converted by Danny Mathews and it looked like Canowindra were in full control of the game.

Leading 18-4, with the match still in the balance, it was a torrid battle in the forwards with Joey Carman leading the way but an intercept from Oberon five eighth to score under the post to close the gap 18-8. Canowindra hit back from a good backline movement for Nick Curtis to score and converted by Danny Mathews to stretch the lead to 24-8.

Oberon with some momentum and a repeat set of six was rewarded with a try which again, not converted, to narrow the gap to 12 points. With 16 minutes left, Nick Curtis scored in the corner to take the lead to 28-12. Oberon scored a late try to have the final score 28-16. Players player went to Joey Carman.

Youth league found the Molong side too strong for them going down 6-44. In patches the young Tigers showed some grit but couldn’t maintain the pressure and gave the opposition too much ball.

The League Tag game was in the balance until the 45th minute where it was the brilliance of Alicia Earsman to slice through the defence and Katie Baker in support to score under the post. Haley White converted 6-0. Defence from both sides was outstanding and this was a great entertaining game to finish off the day.

Next first grade game heads to Bathurst on Saturday with the Juniors playing in Eugowra on Sunday.
