As the sun rose on Anzac Day 2023, Canowindra’s commemorations began with a solemn dawn service at the Memorial Park in Gaskill Street, where those in attendance listened to the stories of Mrs Jenny Weaver.
Following the service, the Canowindra Services Club provided a gunfire breakfast, which allowed people to gather and reflect on the service over coffee and refreshments.
A small wreath laying service was held at the Soldiers’ Tower at the Canowindra Hospital to honour those listed on the memorial and the sacrifices locals made for not only our town but our country.
Servicemen and women, schools, various associations and organisations and family representatives gathered in the main street to proudly March down to the Memorial park.
Guests at the service were humbled to hear from Major Quentin Dalziell. Major Quentin Dalziell has recently called Canowindra home and shared his reflection of life in the defence force and acknowledged both present and past service members.
Wreaths were placed on the cenotaph by locals residents, schools and services, a touching addition to the ceremony.
The Canowindra Services Club opened their doors for lunch and the camaraderie was evident, with service people, families and friends gathering to honour our veterans.
The Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch should be commended on their organisation and presentation of the Anzac Day memorial services. Locals and visitors were moved by the ceremony, and how nice it was for a small town to have such a big turn out.
