Canowindra High School student Archie McDonald recently hit a season high of 70 not out off 64 balls whilst representing Cowra district in the U14s representative competition.
Considering it was his first competitive match since representing Western Plains at the Youth Championships in Dubbo prior to Christmas, Archie was seeing the ball well and, in particular, batted well with the lower order. Batting at number six, Archie lost his batting partners in quick succession until Burg Arnott strolled to the crease batting at number 11.
Burg was representing Cowra District for the first time and as he was playing up an age group, he was naturally quite nervous at facing the older and faster bowlers from Wellington and Gilgandra. The boys managed to add 38 valuable runs for the 10th wicket before Burg was dismissed leaving Archie on 70 not out and the total on 140 runs.
The Wellington/Gilgandra team were looking shaky early on, with Archie claiming the wickets of both openers but they managed to pass Cowra’s total with the loss of only three wickets. Archie finished with 3/25 off his allocated eight overs.
With fine weather forecast for this coming Saturday, we should see all three Canowindra Junior Cricket teams return to the playing fields for the first time this year. Fingers crossed!
