Dear Editor,
Of course Australia should be a Republic!!! Now that there’s no British Empire, it just doesn’t make sense that the King or Queen of England should be Head of State of Australia as well. There is noth- ing the British Monarch contributes to the life of Australia, beyond providing an emotional attach- ment for some of us oldies. Even their family plays for, supports, works for British interests, often at the expense of Australian interests – in sport and business. Can’t get more un-Australian than that!!
Bill, you paint a bleak picture, mate. Republics: achieved by violence, unstable, etc. Constitutional Monarchies: blessed places. As the great John McEnroe said : “You cannot be serious”!!!!
Will any Monarchies survive into the future? Who knows? (I hope the Danish one does though, I rather like “our” Mary and Fred). It’s a safe bet though that any surviving ones will only live and have any meaning within their own national borders. Not all that long ago (in the broad sweep of history) that the Brits themselves had to ask an obscure German princeling to come over and take on the role of King of England (George 1). Can’t see them doing that these days, and for the same reasons can’t see us Aussies all that much longer borrowing and sharing a Brit as our Head of State. It just doesn’t make sense!!
Regards,
Ross Cleary
