A Thank You From The Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch

2 May, 2018 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch would like to thank everyone for their participation in Anzac Day services 2018. It is estimated that 500 people attended the Dawn Service with many visiting from out of town for the Balloon Challenge. The Main service saw over 700 in attendance, it was wonderful to see so many children marching and attending even though it was during school holidays.

We were privileged to have Wing Commander Peter Hall AM and his wife Narelle as our guests this year and I am sure that anyone who heard him speak was moved and inspired to honour the Anzac spirit and to do our best in honour of their sacrifice.Anzac Day is a community event which would not happen without the assistance of many, who make it such a successful event for Canowindra. The fact that, for the past several years, the attendance at the main service has been approximately 700 in a town of only 2,000 residents is a statement of the spirit of our town.

The Sub-Branch would like to thank the Services and Citizens Club for their continued support of the Sub-Branch, not only on Anzac Day but all through the year. We also thank the Senior Leaders from Canowindra High School for assisting to serve breakfastafter the Dawn Service, the local Fire Service who every year help to set up the park with tables and chairs, Lawrence’s IGA for the donation of the bread and butter for the Dawn Service breakfast, the local RFS for assisting with closing the road for the march and the Canowindra and Cowra Police who assist us with the safety of the march.

Thank you also to Dei Curtis and Canowindra High School for the use of the piano and to Helen Payten who played for us this year.

To Con, Canowindra Taxi Service, who always assists those who can no longer march to still participate in the march, to Warren Hogan for driving the jeep, kindly lent by Ann Vincent, and to Robert Byrnes and Sam Statham, our drum corps.

Thank you to Cabonne Council for always having the park in good condition for the day, and to the members of the Sub-Branch who, with me, work to make the day the best it can be.

Christine Sampson
Secretary
Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch
