The CTS Off-road Racing team of Tom and Heyley Stephens competing in the Kalgoorlie Deser Race.
Last week Tom Stephens and daughter Hayley, as his navigator, took part in the Kalgoorlie Desert Race. This was the last round of the Polaris Off-road Championship which has taken the Stephens family across Australia in 2023 to compete in five different events; the first four rounds being held in Charters Towers QLD, Finke NT, Pooncarie NSW and Loveday SA.
It was a long journey across the famous Nullabor however, taking time to stop and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Pink Lake at Penong and the Bunda Cliffs from Head of Bight were highlights of the drive.
The event was held at Mt Vetters Station, north of Kalgoorlie on the fringe of Australia’s greatest desert. The huge tracks of unique land offered a long, off-road desert racing course, through salt clay pans, fast sections in dry lakes, rough rock jumps and sandy tracks with a few twists and turns.
Over 80 off-road vehicles took part in this 360km adrenaline-fueled event with participants from all over Australia.
The Kalgoorlie Desert Race was certainly unique. Racing with motorbikes, at night and photography and race coverage from many helicopters, meant there was as much action in the air as there was on the ground.
Tom and Hayley participate for fun, a hobby for Tom, which has included the whole family and friends who enjoy being a part of the action. On this trip they were joined by Tim, Ash and Julia Wright as support crew.
