A Celebration Of Education: 150 Years In The Making

Canowindra Public School students are ready to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

Preparations are well underway for a mem­orable weekend of activities to celebrate a once in a leftime event; 150 Years of Public Education in Canowindra – 1875 to 2025.

The “Come Home” weekend planned by the Canowindra Public and High Schools is now only a few weeks away, and will fea­ture the following events:

Friday 31 October: Welcome Cocktail Party. Enjoy an evening of fun, laughter, and reminiscing about the past 150 years of education. Raise a glass with fellow edu­cators, alumni, and friends to celebrate this incredible milestone. Don’t miss out on this special event filled with a delicious grazing table, a drink on arrival and great company. Perennialle Plants Nursery, Café and Em­porium, 29 Gaskill St, 6pm to 9pm. Saturday 1 November: School Fete and Open Day. A fun-filled family morning start­ing with an opening ceremony in the school hall followed by the opening of time cap­sules, games, stalls and information dis­plays displays. Canowindra Public School, Tilga St – main entrance opposite Suttor St, 11am to 2pm.

Saturday 1 November: Community Din­ner. A celebration to commemorate the life and work of Bessie Flanagan (nee Robin­son) who instigated school education for all in Canowindra. Bessie founded the public schools in Canowindra in 1870’s and was “a Pioneer of Education in Canowindra.” The Old Vic Inn, 54 Gaskill St, 6.30pm. Limited num­bers, four course meal for $65.00 per head to be paid at the bar on arrival. Bookings to Old Vic Inn at info@oldvicinn.com.au or call 6344 1009 by Friday 17 October.

Sunday 2 November: Canowindra High School Open Day and Picnic Brunch. Enjoy a relaxed morning with family and friends, walk through the school and variety of dis­plays. The High School is also celebrating 50 years of the High School buildings in Browns Avenue. Canowindra High School, Browns Avenue, 8am to 12pm.

The books recording the 150-year history of public education in Canowindra, pub­lished by the Canowindra Historical Soci­ety and Museum, will be on sale at both schools. The books include The Centenary of Public Education in Canowindra 1875 – 1975 and The Past Fifty Years of Pub­lic Education in Canowindra 1975 – 2025. $25.00 per book.

Anyone with connections to public edu­cation in Canowindra are welcome to at­tend and enjoy this weekend. If you have any good quality school photos, please bring them to either school on the “come Home” weekend as the Canowindra His­torical Society would like to scan them for their records.
