Locals and visitors to Cowra have been enjoying the Festival of International Understanding this week. The Festival has included International Women’s Day lunches, Tongan artists, festival lunch time theatre and of course the official opening which welcomed Her Royal Highness, Princess Angelika Tuku’aho, High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga.
One of our personal highlights of the Festival has been the attempt at breaking a Guinness world record for largest gathering of people in grass skirts. Despite a fantastic effort by the community at the festival carnival on Saturday the number required just fell short, with 600 skirts registered.
However Festival Co-ordinator, Kylie Wood, hasn’t given up quite yet and will be submitting all the data and photos to Guinness just in case the information shows that the record was met. Even though the record may not have been broken, that didn’t stop the crowd from enjoying the attempt.
The carnival in River Park was the last event of the day on Saturday after a huge street parade that celebrated the guest nation for this year, Tonga. But the festivities aren’t done yet, if you’re in Cowra today why not go along to the Cowra Musical and Dramatic Society’s lunchtime theatre production of ‘All Washed Up’? The show will begin at 1pm at the Civic Centre and will run for 45 minutes, with tickets only $5.
The weekend also promises to be jam packed with international fun, with the Cowra Eagles invitational rugby match at 7pm on Friday and a Colour Me Happy fun-run on Sunday at 10am. The run, which is Cowra’s first ever colour run, will commence at River Park and promises to be 3km filled with powder, bubbles and laughs. If you’d like to register for the run go to www.registernow.com.au.
