Stormwater Drainage Work Continues

Cabonne Council continue to undertake further stormwater drainage improvements in Canowindra after completing extensive maintenance on two pipeline systems. Council staff have used cameras and specialist flushing equipment to clean the pipeline systems near Billy Paul’s Carpet Store in Gaskill Street, and another in Blatchford Street.

Improvements are planned for the kerb inlet structure in front of the carpet store and an open drain will be cleaned where it runs towards the Belubula River. At this stage, Council have indicated they don’t believe the wheelchair access ramp is the main contributing factor to drainage problems. Time will tell – we will wait and see what the next deluge brings with it.
Household Stormwater – Your Responsibilities
Stormwater that falls onto your property becomes your responsibility to deal with. The most effective means of dealing with stormwater is to direct the run-off into the most appropriate and closest council-owned stormwater infrastructure by means of overland flow paths or physical means such as
underground pipe work. The property owner must ensure the water
quality leaving the property has a neutral or beneficial effect on the downstream catchment, i.e. care must be taken to ensure that no contaminants within your property leave the site during a rainfall event.

Similarly, the land owner cannot redirect stormwater into another property for any reason and must ensure that overland flow is allowed to flow to the natural slope of the land prior to development. It is illegal to discharge any stormwater revolving around Canowindra’s stormwater drainage controversy.

Council has a responsibility to maintain its stormwater infrastructure in a functional and effective manner, notwithstanding that no stormwater asset will always be capable of fully meeting the intensity of every event. For more information call Cabonne Council’s Engineering Department on 6392 3200.
