Cowra is launching its first-ever National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week Awards program.

“In great news for Indigenous affairs, the awards will recognise the wonderful contributions to our community made by Aboriginal groups and individuals during the past year,” said Cowra Mayor Bill West.

This is a community initiative aimed at recognising the work of local Aboriginal sportspeople, youth and elders, and Cr West is urging local groups and individuals to support it.

“We are asking everyone in Cowra— especially the Indigenous community — to consider nominating worthy leaders and achievers in our society,” Cr West said.

There will be categories for youths, sportspeople, community contributors and elders in the inaugural awards.

“Nominating someone is as easy as filling-out an application form and returning it to Cowra Council by Monday, June 29,” Cr West said. “Please consider nominating a community member or group who have significantly enhanced life in Cowra Shire this year.”

Winners will be announced at the end of NAIDOC Week at a special dinner on Saturday July 11th at Cowra Bowling Club. For more information contact Cowra Council on 6340 2000.
