Doorknock Appeal Raises Over $1500

More than 20 Canowindra locals took part in the Salvation Army 2015 Red Shield Doorknock Appeal over the weekend to help end homelessness in Australia.

Between 30-31st May, 8 students from Canowindra High School and 15 volunteers from around town knocked on doors to ask for donations.

“It’s good to know you’re supporting a good cause,” said Canowindra High School student Will Middleton. “We get to help out the community and add it to our resumes.”

“You don’t see behind the scenes what some of these charities do. I really admire them,” said Moyne Chaplain Gwen Barnard, who spent Thursday and Friday raising money for the cause outside IGA. “Two residents from Moyne Aged Care sat with me, and people were very generous, giving away $10-$20 notes like they were nothing. The town really gets together with things like this.”

Volunteers and generous donators raised well-over $1500 which will go towards assistance for homeless people, rehabilitation for alcohol or drug addicted individuals and continuing the work of the Salvation Army in these sectors.

“There are a lot of homeless people in Australia,” said Gwen, “and this money will go toward helping them. We are really happy with what we were able to collect.”
