A Quarter-Century Of Memories Returns To Canowindra: Time Capsule Retrieval

On 14 December 2001, the Canowindra Rotary Club and Canowindra Historical Society joined forces to create a Time Capsule of Memories as the final activity in Canowindra’s year-long celebrations marking the Centenary of Federation.

Time capsules preserve memories, messages and objects for future generations, capturing a snapshot of the social, cultural and personal life of a community at a particular point in time.

In 2001, individuals, families, community organisations and local schools were invited to contribute personal items for the capsule.

These were placed in individual, lunchboxsized plastic containers, each numbered and stored within a larger container, with the intention that the time capsule would be retrieved and opened in 2026.

Now, almost 25 years later, the time has come to bring those memories back to the people who entrusted them to the capsule.

The Canowindra Historical Society and Museum Inc. is currently contacting the original contributors to arrange the return of their containers.

The Society’s committee warmly invites original donors, their descendants and representatives to join us for this special occasion. The official retrieval of the time capsule and the formal return of the individual containers will take place at 11am on Saturday, 21 November 2026.

An open day at the museum, located at 117 Gaskill Street, Canowindra, will commence at 10.30am, providing an opportunity for the wider community to visit the museum and share in this significant moment in Canowindra’s history.

Everyone is welcome to attend the museum open day and witness the retrieval of a unique collection of personal memories that have been preserved for a quarter of a century.

Located at 117 Gaskill St, the Canowindra Historical Museum is a volunteer run musuem that is generally open for visitors on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and 1pm. Admission is free but a donation is appreciated.
