Sunday 4 October, the Feast of St Francis, seemed a good day to release a new film clip for Brother Sun, Sister Moon, an original song and music video by local singersongwriter, Nerida.
The song and film celebrate the beauty of creation and the deep sense of connection it can awaken in us. St Francis expressed this relationship in such a special way when he coined the phrase ‘Brother Son and Sister Moon’.
Speaking of the song, Nerida said: “It was the wonder of creation that first called me to believe there must be a God. Everything seemed too beautiful to have existed by accident, without an incredible artist, designer and maker. In the years since, creation has been my longest close friend, my comforter and mentor, and one of my greatest sources of inspiration, hope and joy.
The psalmists, St Francis and the early Celtic Christians have all encouraged me to recognise and celebrate the presence of God in creation — a truth that gives me deep joy and a sense of connection to “Brother Sun, Sister Moon”, along with the plants, creatures, mountains, rivers and all that surrounds us.
This song calls me to join in with the unfailing praise and honour poured out by creation, and also to care for creation as family”.
Brother Sun, Sister Moon is part of Nerida’s sixth album, In the Midst of the Dark , released in 2025, produced by Paul Colman. Nerida also produced a book of lyrics, poetry, photography and reflection, Companion to go with the album.
The music video is publicly available on YouTube @neridamusic.
