The speed limit on a section of Canowindra Road will be reduced to 80 km/h for the safety of all road users travelling between Canowindra and Cudal.
Transport for NSW conducted a speed zone review along a 32-kilometre section of the road as part of a strategic push to improve safety outcomes on the state’s road network and ensure posted speed limits match the local road environment.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Damien Pfeiffer said the review assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and traffic volumes, and determined a reduced speed limit was appropriate.
“Canowindra Road is a state road running between Canowindra and Cudal with nine intersections, 32 private accesses and no significant gradients,” Mr Pfeiffer said.
“However, the review found a high roadside risk rating along a seven-kilometre section between Nanami Lane and Hilltop Lane due to a significant number of trees within five metres of the road’s edge while in the most recent five years of complete data there have been 13 crashes resulting in 10 casualties and, sadly, three deaths.
“The review found a speed limit reduction for the most concerning section of road would be appropriate.”
As a result of the review, the speed limit on Canowindra Road from 300 metres north of Nanami Lane to 2.32 kilometres south of Toogong Road will be reduced to 100 km/h from Monday 1 June.
The change better aligns with surrounding speed environments and reduces crash severity risk while maintaining suitable traffic flow along this key regional route.
