Dear Editor,
In relation to the school’s celebration I would like to recall for you a very bizarre event from the past that may be interesting to you and your readers.
I went to the primary school from 1950 to 1955 and had a very close association with the school as I lived in Suttor Street during that time and my mother Nancy Lynch was involved with the P&C on the executive.
There was only one class in each grade at that time and the school only went to 3rd Year High School so the school was quite small at that time.
Now for the interesting fact. Each year the school held a school fete which was much the same as it probably is today except for one thing! There was an event that took place that would not be acceptable today – what was it? The second classroom on the northern part of the main building was transformed into a ‘boxing arena’ complete with ropes around a cushioned square that almost filled the room. The idea was that if you wanted to ‘have a go’ , you would challenge a foe, put on the gloes and go a couple of rounds. It was supervised by the teachers.
Can you believe it? The memory of that is still very vivid in my mind.
As the school only went to Year 3 High School, (present day’s fourth form), my parents decided that if I was to go further I would enrol at Cowra High School which I did, and completed 5 years, graduating in 1961 and then to Bathurst Teachers College.
I hope the celebrations are full of happy times and memories and will look forward to reading about it in the Phoenix.
Regards,
Geoff Lynch
