Canowindra Tigers

2 July, 2025 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Canowindra Tigers were back to form with a very good display of rugby league on Sunday defeating Orange United 44 points to 30. As expected, it was a tough and hard game and the Tigers had to be at their best to get the win.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a try to John Grant for a 6-0 lead, but Orange hit back with a trial run in the corner 6-4. Both teams scored another try, but then then the Tigers gained the upper hand to lead 30-10 at the break with tries to Hunt (2) Kennedy and Bennet.

The Orange team had a little more possession midway through the second half putting some pressure on the Tigers and narrowing the lead 34-20. But the Tigers weren’t done, and further tries to Hunt, Dine and Cooney sealed the win, although Orange scored two late tries.

League TagThis was a very close encounter in very cold conditions and the girls played at a very high level. Canowindra went to the break trailing 12 points to 6. It wasn’t until the dying minutes of the game that Orange got on top, to run out winners 24 points to 10. The girls had some good opportunities but didn’t complete and take their chances like the Orange girls did; which was probably the difference in the game.

Youth LeagueUnited ran out winners 32 points to 10, but the score was no indication of how close the game was throughout. The boys put on a couple of very good tries but they seem ed to be a bit intimidated by the opposition. When they put it to them, they were very competitive. This side is still growing in confidence and working their combinations out, but only will be better in the future. Good games were had by Ryan Mckenzie upfront, Noah Brown who was tight round the middle and Harry Duguid who constantly worried the defence with strong runs out in the centres.

This week the Tigers play in Molong.
