Congratulations To The 2025 Cabonne Australia Day Award Recipients

There were 31 awards handed out at Aus­tralia Day celebrations across the Cabonne shire on Sunday, 26 January 2025, with Cabonne Australia Day Ambassador War­ren Potent, attending ceremonies in Cum­nock, Eugowra and Molong.

This year, the Canowindra Australia Day celebrations shone a spotlight on the re­markable individuals and groups who em­body the spirit of community, dedication, and generosity.

Young Citizen of the Year – Darius Car­penter: Darius is a shining example of lead­ership and commitment in the Canowindra community. As a house captain, student council member, and participant in the Duke of Edinburgh award at Canowindra High School, he demonstrates outstanding leadership and dedication. Darius has rep­resented the school and western district in running, cricket, and football.

Beyond his school achievements, Darius works at Canowindra IGA, where he is known for his politeness and helpfulness.

Recently, he stepped up at the High School Ball, partnering with Debutantes whose partners could not attend. Darius is a credit to his family and an inspiration to the com­munity with his positive outlook and energy to help shape its future.

Citizen of the Year – Tom Beath: Tom is a cornerstone of the Canowindra community.

A respected builder and active volunteer, he serves as Chairperson of the Canowin­dra Progress Association and is involved in numerous local organisations.

Tom is a life member of the Canowindra Services Club and plays a key role in or­ganising significant town events such as ANZAC Day and the Canowindra Balloon Festival. Known for his reliability, leader­ship, and willingness to contribute, Tom has earned the deep respect of the community for his tireless efforts to make Canowindra a better place.

Community Group of the Year – Canow­indra Christmas Day Lunch Committee:

Since 2012, the Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch Committee has brought joy and connection to those who might otherwise spend Christmas alone. With two original members still at the helm, this group organ­ises a free, inclusive event that welcomes everyone, regardless of their circumstanc­es.

The committee’s work goes beyond a meal—it fosters a sense of belonging and community. From volunteers to local busi­nesses and organisations, the generosity of Canowindra shines brightly through do­nations, time, and effort. This initiative has become a cherished tradition, offering sup­port and kindness to those in need during the festive season.

• Citizen of the Year – Sean Haynes

 

• Community Group of the Year – Eugow­ra Junior Sports Committee

Shire Awards were presented to:

• Cabonne Sportsperson of the Year – Robert Laffin

• Cabonne Environmental Champion of the Year – Ben Watts

• Cabonne Youth Ambassador – Hayley Stephens

Hayley is 17 and attends Canowindra High School, where she is a 2025 school leader and SRC representative. Hayley’s involve­ment in the Duke of Edinburgh and the Ten4 Ten programs programs is a demonstration of her commitment to continually strive and achieve. Hayley also volunteers willingly within her local community and much fur­ther afield, including at Bridsville during the annual Big Red Bash. After completing her HSC this year, Hayley is looking forward to a gap year in northern Queensland on a cattle station before starting university to study a career in health.
