The National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP) was started in Cowra in November last year and at present are offering one day a week, Wednesday. Kathryn Nicholas explains what the program is designed to do “During the day we look after a person who needs assistance, who can’t be left alone because they have had a stroke, or are frail, or perhaps have dementia. We look after them so their primary carer (such as their husband or wife, or child) can go shopping or visit another town or attend an appointment.”

The aim of the program is the to “help people stay at home with their loved ones” which is considered the best part of the job, says Kath. “The people who come to our group feel secure and enjoy themselves, they participate in activities like playing cards, listening to music, knitting and general socialising. The day gives everyone something to discuss when they go home.”
