The students at Cargo Public School will use their grant funding to relocate and revive neglected raised garden beds so that all children in the school can grow and enjoy produce. The children will be involved in propagating, planting and tending fruits and vegetables to harvest and use in cooking lessons in the school kitchen.
Woolworths, in partnership with Landcare Australia, has awarded over 300 grants of up to $1,000 each to support outdoor learning projects at primary schools and early learning centres across New South Wales.
Each grant will help bring a new creative idea to life, or grow an existing project, that focuses on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices or enhancing native habitats.
Schools to be awarded across New South Wales this year include Cargo Public School and Cowra Public School.
Local Cowra Woolworths store teams will present each recipient with a certificate in the coming weeks, visiting local Cabonne and Cowra primary schools to hear about their plans for each grant.
Woolworths Cowra Store Manager, John Milazzo said: “It’s great to see local schools from across Cabonne and Cowra being awarded grants as part of this year’s program. There’s lots of creative ideas that’ll get students outdoors and hands-on with nature. We’re looking forward to seeing these ideas come to life in the next few months.”
The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program has supported 1,963 primary schools and early learning centres across New South Wales.
Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish, said: “The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants have always been about bringing sustainability into classrooms across New South Wales, and teaching children how to care for the environment around them.
“Thanks to Woolworths hundreds of New South Wales schools have been able to further support environmental champions and support Cabonne and Cowra students to develop hands-on skills that they can take with them when they leave school.”
