The dining room at the Canoindra Hotel was packed to overflowing with both locals and folks from as far afield as Tasmania, Port Macquarie, and the Sunshine Coast to hear a talk by Professor Jo-Anne Reid on Kylie Tennant who wrote her first novel Tiburon in the hotel 1934/35.
Professor Reid discussed the impact of the Great Depression on the town’s residents, those who had to travel from town to town to receive “the dole” and on Tennant herself. She also examined the story of the Whyte family whose members appeared as thinly disguised characters in the novel and how at least some of them may have been unfairly treated.
The event was also an opportunity to unveil a QR-coded plaque in the hotel commemorating Tennant and the novel.
