Last weekend, the League Tag game developed into a very entertaining and close affair with the Tigeressess coming through in the final minutes to snatch victory with a great try to Amy Harrison which was converted to win 24-20. This game and everything you want to see, skill and great defence, closeness and the lead changed eight times during the match but unfortunately Peak Hill could not kick a goal and Canowindra kicked all theirs.
The game opened with the first try to Peakhill go to an early lead of four nil after five minutes, but due to some very skilful play, Amy Harrison scored in the 16th minute for Canowindra to lead 6-4.Then Peak Hill hit back in the 20th minute with a great try to one of their centres to take the lead back 8-6. After a penalty, with Canowindra putting pressure on Peak Hills line Hayley White slipped through the defence to score in the 25th minute giving Canowindra a 12-8 lead. Right on the stroke of half time Peak Hill hit back with a try making the halftime score band 12 all.
The second half opened in the same fashion with great ball movement, it was Peak Hill to score first with a try to take the lead back to 16-12. A great run by Laura Price slid through the defence to speed away to score, which was converted to go in front on the scoreboard 18-16. Peak Hill with around 10 minutes to play scored a try to snatch the lead back to 20-18. After sustained attack from the Tigeresses, Amy Harrison ran around to score under the post in the 28th minute to snatch victory in the jaws of defeat. The try was converted taking the final score to 24-20. A great game of league tag, Katie Price kicked three goals and Indie Heard one. First Grade
Canowindra Tigers first grade side had a tough match against Peak Hill who had a huge pack of forwards and took some containing, especially in the first half. Canowindra Tigers opened the score with a try to Josh Cooney from a nice ball from 5/8 Bennett, taking an early lead 6-0. Peak Hill hit back shortly after in the 16th minute. From some nice play from the Tigers, second rower Hunt ran onto the ball to score for Canowindra to move the score to 10-4. With some good position, Peak Hill put pressure on Canowindra’s line. They moved the ball to the left to find their winger and score a try which was converted – scores locked 10 all. Shortly before half time in the 32nd minute from good ball movement the Tigers, Nathan Whatman forced his way over which was converted by Treasure. Canowindra took a 16 to 10 lead into the break.
Canowindra in the second half only took one and a half minutes for Joe Treasure to cross the line, converting his try – 22 to 10. Josh Cooney’s second try only four minutes later resulted from nice play especially from young debutante, Bailey Kennedy. Canowindra continued the pressure on the Peak Hill side. They were starting to get tired and after a penalty against Canowindra, had good field position for Jack Grant, to bounce out of a tackle to find a hole and dive over in the ninth minute. After some good play from an inside ball Ryan Clark beat two defenders to put the ball over the line, which was converted by Treasure the score 38-10.
Peak Hill retrieved the ball from a bomb and their half dived on the ball near the post which was converted to narrow the gap slightly to 38 – 16 in the 22nd minute. It was a torrid affair for another 15 minutes and then the reliable Wally Gaeta forced his way over which was converted by Treasure.
Ryan Clarke after another beautiful run up through the middle to score a second try in the 35th minute, which was converted giving Canowindra a total of 50. With two minutes to go, Peak Hill scored a try which was converted bringing the final score to 50 points to 22. This was an outstanding effort from the Canowindra Tigers who worked very well as a team and shared the workload, and had a dominant second-half over very confident Peak Hill side.
We must mention the debut of young Bailey Kennedy who showed great speed and agility every time he touch the ball and surely will be an asset to the Tigers. Best and fairest went to Joe Treasure, three points to Ryan Clark, two point to Jack Grant and one point and players player to Ryan Clark.
